Fruiting body, not grain-grown mycelium
Most “lion's mane” material on the market is mycelium fused to a grain substrate that cannot be separated from it. Two numbers show the difference: high β-glucan alongside low α-glucan means mushroom, not starch from grain.
| Parameter | TQM Lion's Mane | Typical grain-grown mycelium material |
|---|---|---|
| Biological material | Fruiting body of Hericium erinaceus | Mycelium fused to a grain substrate |
| β-glucan | High — determined on request for a batch | Usually a few per cent |
| α-glucan | Trace — no starch ballast | Often 10–50% (starch) |
| β : α ratio | 15.7 : 1 in the pilot batch | Frequently below 1 : 1 |
| Hericenones | Determined by HPLC-UV — on request | Usually not determined |
| Batch documentation | COA: heavy metals, pesticides, microbiology, moisture | Usually without glucan testing |
Scope of testing, methods and specification
| Parameter | Method / standard | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| β(1,3)/(1,6)-glucan | Enzymatic, mushroom-specific | Determined on request for a specific batch |
| α-glucan | as above | Determined on request for a specific batch |
| Total glucans | as above | Determined on request for a specific batch |
| Hericenones | HPLC-UV at 280 nm, certified standard, 8-point curve | Determined on request for a specific batch |
| Particle size (d90) | Sieving / laser diffraction | ≤ 60 µm |
| Bulk density | Gravimetric | 0.28–0.44 g/mL |
| Moisture | Gravimetric | ≤ 6% |
| Cadmium | PN-EN 15763:2010 | ≤ 1.0 mg/kg |
| Lead | PN-EN 15763:2010 | ≤ 1.0 mg/kg |
| Arsenic | PN-EN 15763:2010 | Monitored |
| Pesticides | GC-MS / LC-MS, 716-substance panel | Compliant with (EC) 396/2005 |
| Total viable count | PN-EN ISO 4833 | ≤ 100,000 cfu/g |
| Yeasts and moulds | PN-ISO 21527-2 | ≤ 1,000 cfu/g |

| Escherichia coli | PN-ISO 16649-2 | ≤ 10 cfu/g |
Why we do not publish results. These are methods and specification ranges, not figures from one batch. A result only means something together with its batch number, so it goes into the certificate of analysis sent to your quality team before shipment. The table describes how the ingredient is controlled, not what the product does.
Testing and documentation
The documents below are sample data sheets and reports based on test batches. Every commercial delivery comes with its own certificate of analysis.
- Micronised powder data sheet Identification, composition, physical parameters, nutritional values, labelling, shelf life and logistics. Includes the Novel Food status statement.
- Hericenone determination — HPLC-UV at 280 nm Six hericenones: C, D, E, F, G and H. External standard method, eight-point calibration curve, certified hericenone C reference standard. Hericenones form in the fruiting body, so the assay confirms the origin of the material.
- Batch certificate of analysis Results for the batch number: heavy metals to PN-EN 15763:2010, pesticide residues, microbiology to PN-EN ISO standards, moisture and particle size.

Novel Food status
The fruiting body of Hericium erinaceus and its powder are not novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 — they have a documented history of consumption before 15 May 1997. This applies to the fruiting body, not to mycelium. The product contains no ingredients listed in Annex II to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, is non-GMO and has not been irradiated.
Research status versus product communication
The compounds in this ingredient are the subject of ongoing scientific research. The table below describes the state of knowledge about each compound — it is not a claim about the product and not a basis for labelling.
| Compound | Area of ongoing research | Level of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Hericenones | Nerve growth factor (NGF) pathway in cell culture | In vitro and animal studies; in humans, only a few small trials |
| Mushroom β-glucans | Recognition by innate immunity receptors (Dectin-1, TLR2/4) | Mechanism described; no authorised claim exists for mushroom β-glucans |
What this means for your label. Functional mushrooms have no authorised health claims. A finished product can carry a claim through an added nutrient such as niacin: at least 15% of the reference intake per daily portion, in the wording of Regulation (EU) No 432/2012. The micronised powder itself is 100% fruiting body with no additives. For botanical ingredients we use only on-hold claims (Article 28(6) of Regulation 1924/2006) in their registered wording. Every delivery comes with a list of permitted and prohibited wordings.
